Retail giant Amazon is planning on opening brick and mortar grocery stores in the hopes of expanding into the retail food industry, with the first location planned for Los Angeles at the end of the year.

The stand-alone grocery stores would be separate from Amazon-owned Whole Foods and will reportedly have a smaller footprint than most mainstream grocery stores.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon is planning on opening “dozens of grocery stores over the coming years” in several major U.S. cities and could possibly be eyeing vacant K-Mart buildings as potential locations. A source revealed to the Wall Street Journal Amazon has already signed leases for at least two other grocery store locations slated to open early next year.
