Just as many suspected over the years, Sesame Street characters Bert & Ernie are homosexual.
In an interview with LGBTQ website Queerty, ex Sesame Street writer Mark Saltzman revealed of the iconic pair, “I remember one time that a column from The San Francisco Chronicle, a preschooler in the city turned to mom and asked ‘Are Bert and Ernie lovers?’ That coming from a preschooler was fun, and that got passed around, and everyone had their chuckle and went back to it.”
“And I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie they were,” Saltzman told the outlet. “I didn’t have anyway to contextualize them.”
Look, Bert and Ernie’s relationship was WAY healthier than Kermit and Miss Piggy’s.

Saltzman also revealed Bert & Ernie bore a resemblance to his own relationship with his partner, acclaimed editor Arnold Glassman.
“The other thing was, more than one person referred to Arnie and I as ‘Bert & Ernie,’” Glassman said. “I was already with Ernie when I came to Sesame Street. So I don’t think I’d know how else to write them, but as a loving couple…That’s what I had in my life, a Bert & Ernie relationship. How could it not permeate?”
