According to Reuters, the 68-year-old nuclear scientist, known as Fidelito, had been hospitalized for depression before going on to receive outpatient treatment.
“Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, who has been treated by a group of several doctors for several months due to deep depression, took his life this morning,” Cuba’s official newspaper Granma reported.
According to the BBC, Fidelito is said to have grown weary in recent years of living in his father’s shadow and also “being sidelined from Cuban decision-making on energy resources.”
His vision for developing renewable energy on the island of Cuba were apparently overlooked and not included in state policy, with one of Fidelito’s academic colleagues telling Reuters, “I imagine that was disappointing for him.”
