Miramar, Florida mayor Wayne Messam has announced he plans to join the growing list of 2020 Democratic presidential contenders.

Messam, who played football for Florida State University, made the announcement on his campaign website, citing his passion for the “American Dream.”

“I’m passionate about the American dream because it’s not a fictitious thing for me,” Messam revealed, sharing the story of how his parents came to America from Jamaica for a better life.

“The promise of America belongs to all of us, that’s why I’m going to be running for president, to be your champion,” Messam added, promising to focus on issues such as crippling student debt and rising prescription drug prices if he is elected.

Messam became Miramar’s first African American mayor after taking office in 2015.
