Invited by Germany’s Chancellor, Angela Merkel, to represent the United States at a meeting of female business leaders, Ivanka ran into trouble when she spoke of her father as “a tremendous champion of supporting families and enabling them to thrive.”
Her comment was greeted by sounds of groans and hisses from the crowd.
This was Ivanka’s first official overseas trip as adviser to the president and her role was questioned by the panel’s moderator, who asked, “The German audience is not that familiar with the concept of a first daughter. I’d like to ask you, what is your role, and who are you representing, your father as President of the United States, the American people, or your business.”
Ivanka responded, “Certainly not the latter – and I am rather unfamiliar with this role as well, as it is quite new to me.”

Following the rough reception she received from the audience, Ivanka commented. “Politics is politics, as I’m learning. It is better to disagree openly.”
