NBC has fired longtime Today show host Matt Lauer over sexual misconduct allegations.

NBC announced the news via Twitter, revealing, “Matt Lauer has been terminated from NBC News. On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment.”

The news sent shockwaves amongst Lauer’s colleagues at the Today show who learned of the news shortly before going on air.

Lauer’s co-host Savannah Guthrie announced the news to viewers, alongside Hoda Kotb, calling Matt a “dear, dear friend,” but saying she was “heartbroken for the brave colleague who came forward to tell her story.”

“How do you reconcile your love for someone with the revelation that they have behaved badly,” Guthrie told viewers.

According to the New York Times an internal memo to NBC staff regarding Lauer’s termination read, “While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over 20 years he’s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.”
