President Trump has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Empire actor Jussie Smollett, calling allegations he fabricated being assaulted by two men shouting, “this is MAGA country” insulting.

Trump, who ran for president on the “Make America Great” slogan – also known as MAGA – took Smollett to task via Twitter.

“What about MAGA and the tens of millions of people you insulted with your racist and dangerous comments!?” the president tweeted.

Last month Smollett, who is African American and homosexual, alleged he was assaulted by two men who beat him, tied a noose around his neck and doused him in a chemical substance. Chicago police allege Smollett paid the men to perform the attack because he was upset about the pay he was receiving for his role on Empire. Smollett is due in court on Friday and has had his bail set at $100,000.
