In doing so, Melania followed a century-long tradition, which began with President Taft’s wife Helen back in 1909.
During the donation ceremony, the First Lady revealed of the white silk gown designed by Herve Pierre, “It can be a daunting task to choose an outfit that will be mesmerized and will become part of our nation’s story and forever history.”
While the tradition of donating inaugural gowns was started by Helen Taft, the Smithsonian does have on display a dress worn by Martha Washington, which dates all the way back to the 1780’s!
