Italian designer Gucci is facing backlash after their “Balaclava Knit Top” sweater was compared to blackface.

According to the Associated Press, the company has been forced to pull the $890 sweater from stores after receiving complaints it resembled blackface makeup.

Gucci took to social media to apologize for the sweater, which covers the nose and includes a red cut-out over the lips, writing, “Gucci deeply apologizes for the offense caused by the wool balaclava jumper. We can confirm that the item has been immediately removed from our online store and all physical stores.”

“We consider diversity to be a fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected, and at the forefront of every decision we make,” the Italian fashion house said in a statement via Twitter. “We are fully committed to increasing diversity throughout our organization and turning this incident into a powerful learning moment for the Gucci team and beyond.”
