Ecuador has confirmed WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has taken out Ecuadorian citizenship.
Assange, who has been living at Ecuador’s embassy in London for more than five years to avoid being arrested, took out citizenship to the country on December 12.

Assange recently posted a picture of himself wearing an Ecuadorian soccer shirt, spurring rumors he had taken out citizenship to the country.
According to the Daily Mail, Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa had asked London to recognize Assange as a diplomat, which would give him safe passage out of the United Kingdom. That request was denied by the British Government. Ecuador is still seeking a “dignified” and “just” solution as Assange continues living in exile at the embassy.
