The Miss Universe Organization announced that Miss Teen USA beauty pageants will no longer feature a swimsuit portion of the competition, according to USA Today. The segment will be replaced with a new athletic-wear portion in which the contestants will be judged.

According to USA Today, Miss Universe president Paula Shugart urged the importance of replacing the swimsuit portion with the new athletic-wear segment to state directors, stating, “This decision reflects an important cultural shift we’re all celebrating that empowers women who lead active, purposeful lives and encourage those in their communities to do the same. She continued, “Our hope is that this decision will help all of Miss Teen USA’s fans recognize these young women for the strong, inspiring individuals they are.”

Current Miss USA title-holder Katherine Haik also agreed with the change. She told the news outlet, “As a member of a softball team and a competitive dance team, I spend a lot of time in athleticwear,” she said. “This new direction for Miss Teen USA is a great way to celebrate the active lives that so many young women lead and set a strong example for our peers.”

The 2016 Miss Teen USA pageant will take place in Las Vegas on July 20. Categories include, evening gown, athletic-wear, and personal interview.
