Time magazine’s person of the year 2018 will honor killed, or imprisoned journalists around the world.

Named “The Guardians” by Time, the magazine will have four different covers featuring journalists from across the globe including Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed inside the Saudi Embassy in Turkey in October.

Another cover will feature the staff from the Annapolis Capital Gazette, where five employees were gunned down over the summer. The remaining covers will feature Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo – two Reuters journalists who were arrested in Myanmar while investigating the massacre of Rohingya muslims, with their wives appearing on the cover as the men remain detained behind bars – and Maria Ressa, chief executive of the Philippines news website Rappler. Ressa was indicted last month on tax evasion charges, charges civil liberties advocates warn is really a crackdown on free speech.

According to Time, they were chosen “for taking great risks in pursuit of greater truths, for the imperfect but essential quest for facts, for speaking up and for speaking out.”
