Chelsea and Ivanka met through their parents, who surprisingly used to be friends – at least on the surface. Hillary and Bill even attended Donald’s wedding to Melania back in 2005. However, as both candidates went head-to-head in combative debates many wondered if the friendship between the daughters would survive.

Fortunately, for Chelsea and Ivanka when it comes to their friendship the pair concentrate on what they have in common, rather than politics.

“She’s a great girl and she’s a great friend to me,” Ivanka revealed in an interview with On The Record’s Greta Van Susteren. “We’re not candidates. We’re the children of candidates. We’ve stayed close to one another, maybe a little less publicly so, but she’s a good friend, we support each other.”

Chelsea also expressed similar sentiments when she spoke to People magazine last fall. “Our friendship has never been about politics,” Chelsea told the mag. “I don’t expect it will be about politics in the future.”

Good advice during this election, which has seen friendships strained and emotions running high. Experts offer advice for friends who are divided along party lines: Firstly, agree to disagree and if that’s just not feasible avoid the subject of politics altogether. Concentrate on things you have in common with one another. Be aware of how Facebook impacts your friendships – if you have a good friend who is constantly posting political memes contrary to your beliefs keep scrolling. Commenting will only end in raising stress levels and possibly ruining a good friendship. Lastly, respect your friend’s decision to vote for someone different. Respect is the foundation of all good relationships. So change the subject, remember your common ground and keep in mind this volatile election will be over soon!
